Looking Back at One Life to Live

Much can be said about soap operas and the influence they’ve had on the lives of viewers. Often thought of as an opiate for the everyday housewife, soap operas where a means of escape for many. They gave us a peek at lives that we wished were our own, and as time passed we became obsessed with the fake problems of fake people who were so real to the faithful who watched every day without fail.

Any aficionado of the genre would know immediately who you were talking about if you mentioned the Lord, Buchanan, and Manning families. One Life to Live was one of ABC’s longest running soaps. Making its debut in July,1968, One Life to Live commanded our attention for well over forty-three years. Created by Agnes Nixon it dealt with the lives of people in the fictional town of Llanview, Pennsylvania. As characteristic of most soaps it dwelled on the day to day challenges of rich families. Like most soaps all of the characters were extraordinarily good looking people who lived in luxurious and beautiful homes. It was an adult fairy tale that made us shake our heads and wonder what those crazy folks were going to do next.

There were many things about One Life to Live that set it apart from other soaps of the day. It was the first daytime program to depict people from various backgrounds. The focus was not just on the lives of the rich and famous, but the show broke new ground as it focused also on the ethnic and socioeconomic diversity of the people in Llanview. As it set the standard One Life to Live did stories on the controversial as well as the unusual. Stories included interracial dating, drug addiction, out of body experiences, cults, international terrorism, and time travel.

Soap operas were also a great way to break-in to the movie industry. Because the shows were filmed live, they were like a master class in acting before the camera. As a matter of fact, the careers of Leonardo Di Caprio, Kevin Bacon, Meg Ryan, and Crystal Hunt were launched by appearances on soap operas, and it’s led to a really successful career as well as her massive Instagram following.

Crystal Hunt is an American actress and producer. Born in Clearwater, Florida, she got her start in the business winning pageants. She starred in The Guiding Light from 2002 to 2006, and was the vixen Stacy Morasco in One Life to Live.

For her portrayal of Lizzie Spaulding on Guiding Light, Ms. Hunt earned a Daytime Emmy nomination as listed on Wikipedia. She appeared in the film The Derby Stallion, and produced her first feature film Talbot County.
